The woodland gardens at Wisley provide the ideal habitat for the National Plant Collection of Epimedium, which is now well-established after some years. The collection contains nearly 250 accessions. A central reference collection is being built up from the accessions distributed around the garden at Wisley.

In good flowering seasons, the collection generates much interest among visitors to the Garden. In addition, active contacts are maintained with a variety of other institutions and individuals. Recently, a cooperative project was carried out with Reading University, involving DNA studies on plants from the collection.

The entire collection is catalogued in the RHS Horticultural Database, and steady progress is being made in creating herbarium and photographic records of the collection.
